STOMACH SURGERY

Stomach surgery may be needed for treatment of benign or malignant tumors, peptic ulcer disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Surgery of the stomach usually requires removal of a portion or all of the stomach (subtotal or total gastrectomy). Subtotal gastrectomy involves removal of the lower portion of the stomach and reconnecting it to the small bowel. Total gastrectomy involves removal of all of the stomach and connects the small bowel to the esophagus.

We hold frequent multidisciplinary conferences to discuss cases and treatment plans. Often, radiation and/or chemotherapy are needed before or after surgery for stomach cancer.

Surgery remains the primary treatment modality for patients with stomach cancer. Our surgeons are highly experienced in the complex techniques required to perform stomach surgery.
